Phase 5 & 6 of the Clark Fork River cleanup

Cleanup Continues on the Clark Fork River

The Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and their contractors continue remediation of the Clark Fork River. July 2014 saw the beginning of work on the Clark Fork Coalition's Dry Cottonwood Ranch at Galen. This area is known as Phase 5 and 6 of DEQ's cleanup that extends from Warm Springs to Garrison. The project area covers 4.5 miles of river. As of August 2015 nearly 300,000 cubic yards of contaminated material has been removed and nearly 20,000 linear feet of streambank have been rebuilt. Internal roads have been completed and on-site borrow areas have been developed. These borrow areas provide important native soils and rocks for the project and will eventually be converted into a healthy wetlands area. The project will continue through winter of 2015 with an anticipated completion in the spring of 2016.
